Field Trips for Harbor Kids

Snorkel Discovery
Children, children what do you see? What really lives down there, “under the sea”?
Kids who love to explore always wonder what really lives, under the sea. Offered in a shallow, sheltered salt pond, this snorkel discovery is great for children (& parents) of ALL swimming abilities as well as those that are still wading! Discover shrimp, crabs, fish, jellies & more.  Nets, masks, snorkels and instruction are all provided. Please have water shoes and shorts you don’t mind getting wet.

Explore the Shore
Children, children what do you see? What really lives down there, “under the sea”?
Kids who love to explore always wonder what really lives, under the sea. Your children will have an opportunity to use masks and nets to see and capture crabs, seaweeds and fish that call Poucha Pond home. Find fish, non-stinging jellyfish, crabs, shrimp and sea worms! Nets, masks, snorkels and instruction are all provided. Please have water shoes and shorts you don’t mind getting wet.

Felix Neck Trek

Afternoon Adventures Outdoors:

Seashore, forest, pond, field, and marsh adventures await! Activities will vary weekly, go on a quest and discover the history of Felix Neck or be nature detectives and look for evidence that animals have left behind. There’s something to discover even if it’s raining, participants can explore our Discovery Room and look at our live turtles, and salt water tank animals.  Participants should be prepared to be outside on the trails for the entire program time. We recommend sneakers or sandals that have backs (no flip-flops). Mosquitoes are present in the summer months, guests should wear lightweight long pants and long sleeve shirts, or bring their own bug repellent (wipes and lotions are preferred over sprays).

World of Reptiles and Bird Park
Kids who like all kinds of animals really love this one! See New England’s largest snapping turtle and visit naturalist Gus Ben David and his immaculate Vineyard facility that houses the largest snakes on display in the United States. See endangered cranes and real eagles! This unique education program allows children to get up close and personal with unique creatures from around the world and those native to Martha’s Vineyard.

Island Alpacas
Every participant will learn the basics about the alpacas, where they come from and why they are important to us. You will meet “the herd” including some of the newest members.  Kids (and parents?) will do hands-on activities such as barn chores, feeding &care, halter training and maybe even witness a new birth to the herd!  Don’t miss out on this special program offered to the Harbor View families.

(Not-So-Creepy) Creatures of the Night
If you have ever wondered what goes on at night on Martha’s Vineyard…here is a great chance for you to discover our island creatures.  Strap on a headlamp, use a “bat detector” and even see underwater night-life with a special lamp!  The mysteries await all 4-8 year olds as we take a night trip to Chappaquiddick Island…

Teen Kayak Tour
Our young teen guests will not want to miss this great afternoon voyage in the shallow waters of nearby Chappaquiddick.  No prior experience is needed as your Instructors will make your experience as easy as walking.  Local birds (Heron, Osprey & Terns) and sea life (crabs, sea sponges, clams) will abound as you paddle to a remote island midway through your tour.  This one is only for ages 12-15…and be sure to sign up early!

Cape Pogue Lighthouse & Beach Tour
Climb aboard a Trustees vehicle and ride across pristine beach roads as you head to the nearly 150 year old lighthouse.  Local experts will provide great stories and local knowledge of this vast preserve.  The climb to the top of Cape Poge Lighthouse will be worth every step as you view Martha’s Vineyard from a vista like no other!  (Sign-up early as space will be limited)

Small additional fee for all Harbor Kids field trips

 * All aspects of Harbor Kids Club are focused on providing your child with a safe and fun environment where they are free to explore, learn and laugh. Our top priority for a successful summer experience is having the highest quality activity leaders. Our Activity leaders participate in an extensive training program that emphasize on the care and well being of our participants, quality programming, and safety.  Including American Red Cross, CPR, and first aid!
